Grand Cards: USA! USA!

Monday, May 31, 2010

Yes, I know that these are all "commemorative 4th of July edition" cards, but this is a National Holiday you know and these just came out. Also, I can't believe how many of them there are. As far as I can tell, this is all of the Tigers in the set, but you never know what else might pop up.

  1. I dislike the fact that they give 4th of July hat variations to players that never wore them (Cobb, Greenberg). Also, I'm shocked to see Bunning in anything but a Phillies uniform.

  2. It's crazy how many of these Topps has issued. By my count there are eight Cubs cards, too. I've managed to snag six of them; still working on the last two.

  3. For me, Bunning was always a Tiger because he played in the era when my dad was growing up and had most of his cards. I wouldn't be too shocked if I were you--this isn't like all those Ryne Sandberg-as-Phillie cards. Bunning played for the Tigers for the first 9 seasons of his career (he played 6 in Philly--and only 4 good ones) and spent 5 of his 7 All Star seasons in Detroit.

Baseball Reference has a good rundown of his career numbers. He was simply incredible in Philadelphia, but only for 4 seasons. Now that I look at it, I'm rather shocked that he's in the Hall of Fame as a Phillie and not a Tiger, although I suppose it was those 4 seasons that really made his HOF case.

  4. I like the cards, but, like so many inserts, they'll be out of my affordable pay scale. I hope to get a few, if I can find them.

Great way to honor baseball, the Tigers, and the USA on this Memorial Day.
