Inquiring Minds Want to Know: Best Discontinued Set of the Last 10 Years?

I'm genuinely curious what everyone thinks about this. There have been a lot of cards released by a lot of companies since 2001, and many sets/brands that were short lived. What has been the best?

Are you a Masterpieces person? Goudey? Fleer Greats of the Game? Topps Gallery? There are countless options.

(PLEASE don't be limited to the couple I've listed here)

I ask because I'm pretty sure that I know the answer. Let me know what set(s) you've loved and lost and I'll show you my favorite later tonight.

Here's a hint:

  1. I think Masterpieces is the best, then Goudey is second. Goudey was really fun, but I think Masterpieces could have worked just about every year because the player list was small and they could have kept adding and subtracting stars to keep it interesting without doing too much with the design.

  2. That's a really great question. I'd say Masterpieces as well. It was a really cool looking set that definitely had that retro vibe without directly taking an existing card design.

I also really liked both Goudey and Bowman Heritage, probably more than Masterpieces. The only problem with those 2 was that they had limited old designs to work with. Both Goudey and Bowman were only around for a few years so they were bound to run out of designs to pilfer. Also considering the drop off in design quality every year with Goudey, maybe it's not such a bad thing they're not around any more.

  3. Masterpieces for me too. The texture of the cards, the paintings, the hits. All were pretty great. For me the later sets of Topps Gallery were as good. I like painted sets to supplement the flagships.

  4. I really liked masterpieces, but the sets I miss the most as a team collector are the Upper Deck 40 man and Topps Total.

  5. I'm almost positive Masterpieces will blow away the rest of the candidates.

But I liked Fleer Greats of the Game. Total, too. Good stuff.

Goudey gets a big meh. Except for '09 Goudey which gets a (*so very frightened*)

  6. Not to jump on the bandwagon, but it's Masterpieces for me, too.

  11. I would have to say Fleer Greats of the Game, I liked the inserts and the checklist of hits and Topps All-Time Fan Favorites...I liked the way the used different player photos when they reproduced the cards and maybe because I was very lucky with the hits on the few boxes I bought. Tigers and a Cal Ripkin Jr. auto.
